We mow our lawns for several reasons. Of course we want our lawn to look good but mowing also minimises weeds by cutting them prior to them spreading their seeds. Different varieties of lawn have different mowing requirements, however there are general guidelines you can follow.
Mowing - sit down
To have a lush, thick lawn mow regularly
Only remove 1/3 of the leaf when you mow. (If your grass is longer mow it a couple of times until it is the height you want)
Don’t mow your lawn too short as this will put it under stress, inviting weeds to take control.
Keep the blades on your mower sharp and don’t use old fuel.
Don’t mow wet grass
In shady areas keep your lawn a bit longer
Below are suggested mowing heights for the 3 different varieties of turf we grow at the farm. As a general rule use the lower height for summer and the higher for winter.
Mowing height; mow
Eureka Kikuyu at 20-30mm
Sir Grange 10-60mm
Tiftuf Bermuda 10-30mm
Sir Walter Buffalo 30-40mm
MOWING NEW LAWN
Wait until your new lawn can no longer be lifted off the ground before attempting its’ first mow. (Generally at least 2 weeks). We advise you take 1/3 of the height off the blade of grass when mowing. Once your lawn has established itself you need to start a mowing schedule. During the warmer weather you may have to mow more frequently, perhaps even weekly or fortnightly depending on the amount of rain. Once we head into the cooler months the frequency of mowing will decrease significantly.
