If you have part shade or mixed sun (common in suburban yards), Sir Walter DNA Certified Buffalo is a best in class choice: shade tolerant, tough, and low-maintenance. It was originally selected in the Hunter Valley to solve exactly this problem.

Depending on your region, sun/shade levels, and use, we can advise whether another variety might be appropriate.

Prepare a free draining base, schedule delivery for the day you lay, butt joins tightly, and water immediately. Avoid gaps/overlaps and keep slabs moist while you work

Keep turf and the topsoil constantly moist during establishment. As lawn matures, water deeply and less often. Morning watering is ideal.

Generally 3-4 times per year: in spring, summer, and autumn. Wait until the grass is actively growing before applying fertiliser.

Follow the “one-third rule”– never remove more than a third of the leaf in a single cut. Typical guide heights: Buffalo 30–50 mm; Couch 10–30 mm; Zoysia 10–50 mm; Kikuyu 30–50 mm (test what your lawn tolerates best).

Yes – periodic aeration relieves compaction and improves water/nutrient flow; best in spring or autumn. Heavy thatch may require dethatching/renovation.

Water deeply but less often to encourage deep roots. Morning watering reduces disease risk; tailor frequency to season and soil. Use catch cups or rain gauges to measure what you’re actually applying.

Seasonal Lawn Care

Summer:

deeper, less frequent watering; keep to the one third rule; spot treat weeds.

Autumn:

light feed before winter, raise mowing height, tidy edges/thatch as needed.

Winter:

mow higher/less often; avoid overwatering; plan any spring renovation.

Spring:

fertilise, aerate if compacted, ramp up mowing as growth resumes.
